Note: As a security company, Duo respects that some of our customers prefer not to publicly state which solutions they use. In that spirit, we have removed the client name and identifying details from this case study.

The Challenge

A company handling sensitive data for Fortune 500 companies in the financial sector needed to make sure their client data was secure. “We can’t have any break-ins,” said the company’s security administrator. They operate with a team of contractors alongside their “core group” of employees and those contractors need to access corporate data on a regular basis, from wherever they’re working.

With all of their connections coming through virtual private network (VPN), they required a two-factor solution that would couple with their existing infrastructure and satisfy the security requirements their clients demanded.

The Solution

The security team knew they needed two-factor and started researching and evaluating solutions. A contact from their hosting provider recommended Duo to serve the company’s needs and, after a quick evaluation, the security team decided to trust Duo to protect their client data.

The company’s clients and vendors often require risk assessments. In one particular risk assessment performed by a consultant from Rapid7, an attempt to crack their VPN connection was blocked by Duo. “Furthermore, the consultant tried several techniques to exploit vulnerabilities in the VPN implementation. None of the attacks were successful largely due to the dual factor authentication in use,” the security administrator quotes from the assessment.

“We’re very thankful to have Duo in place,” he says. “We work with sensitive data and the security of our network is extremely important. Having Duo Security in place allows us to sleep at night.”
