The Challenge

Softwire is a UK-based company offering bespoke software and consultant services to both large enterprise clients, like BBC, Lonely Planet, McAfee, Verizon, and Microsoft, as well as to start-up Internet ventures.

Their mission: Provide agile software solutions for organizations of all sizes, and adapt to fit customer needs.

This means working with vendors and security solutions at their clients’ request. Two-factor authentication came up time and time again with prospective clients as either a must-have or a strongly-preferred layer of protection. Softwire needed to lock down their data with two-factor in order to secure new business, so they started the research process.

Knowing it was best-practice to use multi-factor, but having previously lacked a workable solution Softwire initially sought out two-factor authentication to satisfy the needs of existing and potential new clients. The search for authentication vendors started simply -- with a Google search. They explored hardware token authentication providers, but quickly discovered that they were “too expensive and a bit old-school,” according to Phil Marsden, owner of Softwire.

They needed a solution that would work for a wide variety of people including employees, clients, and even those without smart phones who needed to authenticate using other means such as SMS message or landline authentication option.

“We have a lot of techies and they can sort problems out themselves. They still want slick and painless, along with a nice user-interface, though. Our sales team needs it to be even easier,” said Phil.

The Solution

Why did Softwire choose Duo Security over competitors? Seeking a simpler and more accessible solution for his company, Phil began researching mobile solutions, starting with LoginTC, but found that they fell short because they didn’t support SMS codes alongside their other authentication methods.

Duo’s solution offered a wide variety of authentication methods, including SMS and landlines, which Phil needed for his team. With the addition of the “remember this device” option available, too, he went with Duo. He wanted a secure solution that was as unobtrusive and as simple as possible.

“Duo Push works so well. You literally just feel your phone vibrate and you log right in with Duo Push,” said Phil. “Historically, you would go into your phone, click on an app, then type in a number. Duo Push is just one click and you’re in.”

Duo’s two-factor authentication solution can be installed on phones as an app (Duo Mobile), and also supports a multitude of additional authentication methods -- Duo Push, SMS, voice and hardware tokens.

Duo’s two-factor is also cloud-based, eliminating the need for hardware and software installation, making it both fast and easy to deploy while cutting down on support overhead for administrators.

“The whole process with Duo was a pretty easy one, really,” says Phil. “The trial was really good. Price is good, especially when you factor into account that the price includes SMS allowances. Duo just works.”
