When I applied to Duo's internship program, a few months into switching careers and starting graduate school, I had already come to anticipate one of two responses from recruiters: polite confusion, or outright silence. Imagine my surprise when I received a response not only immediately, but enthusiastically, especially regarding those very experiences that didn't fit into a neat box.
Thankfully technology never stands still. While the government has struggled with their passwordless journey over the last 16 years, the commercial world, struggling under the constant barrage of credential breach after credential breach and after relying for years on the password as the only thing standing between an attacker and their data, finally cried uncle. From this pain, WebAuthn was born.
We’ve grown a lot as a company since then, and so has the web — and the technical standards we use to build our tools. As we plan for the future, we’re excited to announce a major initiative that will make the Duo authentication experience even easier and more effective for everyone.

Telephony is a unique business. I initiate a call on a device that I carry in my pocket, and in seconds I can speak to someone on the other side of the world. The call travels over routes owned by a series of different companies through many different jurisdictions. This works because they have agreed to a system of billing that will ensure that if they make the connection happen that they will get paid for it. It is that agreement that enables connections to be so reliable to make, but it also enables toll fraud.
