How does phishing-resistant MFA work, and why does it matter for access management?

Phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication works by requiring a credential that cannot be intercepted or replayed by an attacker, such as a FIDO2 security key, a biometric, or a verified push notification bound to a trusted device. It matters for access management because traditional MFA methods like SMS codes and one-time passwords can be stolen through phishing, social engineering, or MFA fatigue attacks. Phishing-resistant MFA closes that gap by tying the authentication factor to something the attacker cannot copy.

What is adaptive risk-based access?

Adaptive risk-based access is a method of enforcing access policies that change based on the risk level of each login attempt. Instead of applying the same rules to every user, the system evaluates signals such as the user's location, device posture, network, and behavior, and then decides whether to allow the login, require additional verification, or block it. This approach lets organizations protect high-risk logins without adding friction to low-risk ones.

How does Cisco Duo integrate with Active Directory for access management?

Cisco Duo integrates with Active Directory through the Duo Authentication Proxy, which adds multi-factor authentication and access policies to existing Active Directory deployments without replacing the directory. Customers can sync users and groups from Active Directory into Duo, manage authentication centrally through the Duo dashboard, and enforce adaptive access policies across on-premises and cloud applications. The integration is designed to deploy quickly, often within a single day for initial testing.
