Hovione + Duo
Portugal's largest pharmaceutical company uses Duo's trusted access solution to protect their users across five different countries.

The Challenge
In addition to providing FDA-inspected plants to develop new drugs, Hovione also offers proprietary product development and licensing opportunities for drug products.
The company relies on the knowledge and expertise that they have, meaning they have a lot of intellectual property that the need to protect, according to Joao Alvarinho, Hovione’s Director of IT.
The Solution
“We work on drugs not yet in the market - so there’s a lot of need for confidentiality,” Joao said.
They recognized that usernames and passwords were not strong enough to protect access to their assets. While they are using many other security tools, they didn’t have a solution that could help them achieve stronger user authentication.
Easy to Deploy
Hovione uses Duo’s two-factor authentication company-wide across all of the countries they do business in, around 800 total users. That includes for users in their headquarters in Portugal, drug development plants in Ireland, Macau and China; and in an R&D facility in the U.S.
It took only a few weeks to roll out Duo by country. They chose Duo over its competitors because it was easy to use, rapid to deploy, and provided easy, out-of-the-box integrations. Hovione protects access to their webmail, terminal servers and Check Point VPN with Duo.
