“Once we decided to go with Duo, it was really a piece of cake to integrate their API into our tool. We had Duo up and running in no time.”

A qualified security assessor for PCI DSS compliance, NetWorks Group needed to have two-factor authentication in order to satisfy regulatory policies
NetWorks Group is a managed security services firm with over 15 years of experience developing security and networking architecture aligned with their clients’ infrastructure and compliance needs.
Working as an extension of their clients’ security teams, NetWorks Group manages clients’ technologies, performs ethical hacking (penetration tests and vulnerability scans), and handles compliance, governance and risk management needs. In general, NetWorks Group’s clients don’t have the funding to staff a sufficient in-house security team and/or they aren’t able to keep up with the ever-changing security training required for an internal team. NetWorks Group’s clients also often have extensive compliance requirements and need the expertise and experience of the security teams at NetWorks Group.
Recognizing that they needed two-factor authentication as a standard layer of security for their clients, NetWorks Group sought out solutions that would work for their organization and for their customers. As a qualified security assessor for PCI DSS compliance, NetWorks Group knew that they needed to have two-factor authentication in order to satisfy regulatory policies.
NetWorks Group needed to integrate Duo’s easy and effective two-factor authentication solution with their clients’ systems. The two-factor solution needed to be user-friendly for customers with very small security or IT teams, and their end-users, and also easy for NetWorks Group to oversee and manage for their clients.
In addition, Duo needed to work with NetWorks Group’s customer portal, which they built as the main hub for client interaction, and those communications required another layer of security for confidentiality. NetWorks Group leverages the customer portal to allow clients to view performance statistics as well as track change control and trouble ticketing. The customer portal enables client visibility to current status as well as historical information and facilitates the transparency that is critical when clients partner with a managed services provider.
Duo’s API Edition integrated seamlessly into NetWorks Group’s customer self-service portal, which enables their customers to log in and decide which method of authentication they want to use, without requiring assistance or interaction from NetWorks Group’s team of experts. It’s simple and easy-to-use, requiring little to no overhead for NetWorks Group.
“Once we decided to go with Duo, it was really a piece of cake to integrate their API into our tool. We had Duo up and running in no time,” said David.
Duo Security’s API Edition provided the solution NetWorks Group needed for their clients, allowing them to use a trusted and secure product instead of building their own two-factor authentication solution.
They expected resistance from some of their customers who hadn’t yet deployed two factor within their own organizations, so they knew they needed to find a two-factor solution that was easy for the end user.
NetWorks Group discovered that Duo’s two factor was so intuitive that their VP of Business Development, David Howard was able to watch a client set it up and try Duo’s solution for the first time, with David walking her through each step. Not only did she get it set up without any trouble, but she also navigated to the “Manage Users” page in the self-service portal, added a user from the next office over. She even volunteered to become the instructor for the next employee, showing them how to enroll in Duo. “It was that easy,” said David.
Along with the painless integration Duo’s API Edition offered, NetWorks Group chose Duo because they had already been using Duo’s solution internally and found that they were regularly recommending it to their customers. NetWorks Group began integrating Duo’s two factor into their clients’ systems soon after.
“We chose Duo Security based on our experience after evaluating the other two-factor authentication solutions out there, and it’s been a great experience all along,” said David.
The wide variety of authentication methods was one major perk of Duo over other two-factor authentication vendors assessed. Duo allows end-users to authenticate via Duo Mobile (convenient, one-tap authentication on mobile phone), SMS, phone callback, hardware tokens, Yubikey, U2F tokens, and passcodes. These methods allow users the ability to authenticate even when they’re offline, with mobile apps, or just landlines. Users can also have multiple devices, and choose their preferred method during login.
That level of flexibility is what NetWorks Group needed, since they were working with such a wide variety of clients with different organizational needs and end-user accessibility requirements.
“Duo provides a better approach -- a simpler approach -- to doing two-factor authentication,” said David.
